Welcome to English 12!
Your senior year is an exciting and important year, and we want to make it as successful as possible! You will be studying British literature along with various literary forms, such as short stories, novels, drama, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. We will concentrate on various writing styles, including research, and develop your skills in grammar, vocabulary, and public speaking.
The textbooks/materials used will be Pearson: Common Core Literature Georgia: The British Tradition, grammar from various sources, assigned novels, plays, online texts, websites, web-based tools, vocabulary packets, project assignments, blogs and others. The specific resources are subject to change based on the teacher's discretion. You will need to bring your textbooks/materials every day to class unless otherwise announced. You will also need a three-ring binder to keep your work orderly. Please have a black pen for most assignments. Pencils will also be used on scantrons and miscellaneous items (#2). Bring a computer disk or flash drive to save material in class or the lab. An assignment notebook is recommended. Make sure your Internet access sheet is on file in order to do projects.
Your grade will reflect your effort and natural abilities so your participation in class, group work, and homework will be an integral part of your grade. Expect homework! Unit tests will be given after each literature unit, novel, or major work. Unannounced quizzes will be given over reading material and class assignments. Projects, recitations, and essays will be assigned during the semester. Vocabulary quizzes will be given at the end of a vocabulary unit or come from the literature selections. Everything should be kept in your notebook unless told otherwise. You will be expected to complete all assignments when due! Your grade will be configured as follows set by The English Department:
Formative 40% An exam will be given that counts 20% of the grade. Seniors will
Summative 60% take an SLO (pretest and posttest). Further details about exemptions,
etc. will be given when finalized by the administration.
You are responsible for completing missed work. Check with me before or after class or school for assignments. Tests/quizzes/homework should be made up in a timely manner, so plan accordingly. You are to follow the code of conduct outlined in your student handbook. If you have difficulty, see me! I will be available after school most days. Please check with me first. I want each person to succeed and your cooperation is needed to make this semester successful!
I will do my best to make this class interesting and inviting. We will do a variety of activities, but everything will not be fun! The following should help you be successful this semester:
Be respectful Be Responsible Be Safe Be prompt Be Prepared Be Attentive
